My best friend bounces between a few funeral homes in Victoria, BC, and he's mentioned some of these things to me. It definitely seems like a tough lifestyle. I don't know if this a consolation, but you LOOK like a funeral director. An awesome one.

Very well stated. As Funeral Directors we are 3D. We have dedication, determination, and desire to help other people in their time of need that we often neglect our on family. I'm proudand honored to be in this profession

There is a great scene in "Godfather II", (taken as a package with "The Godfather", THE greatest movie ever; especially viewed from a business/personal enmeshment much like ours), wherein the Hyman Roth character states, "...and THIS is the business we have chosen!".
I have often wondered in my 40 years of funeral service, if we chose it or if it chose us.
There are many days, Caleb, where I feel as though I have a trailer hitch attached to my posterior, and most everyone is hanging on, hoping I can pull them through the quagmire of death, grief, small business management, family issues, logistics, trivialities, etc...Then I answer the next phone call, the compassion and sense of responsibility for my neighbors, community and friends re-emerges, and, indeed, we strap on the tie, button the coat, and respond as only we can.
Why?
"Because THIS is the business we have chosen."

Love your blog. We own a home in a small town....relate to all stated above. Interestingly enough, my husband has always compared the stress of the job to planning a wedding in just a few days. Such a great comparison! Thanks for your blog. Keep up the great articles!

Thank you Caleb for your great article. I am the sister of a Funeral Director who works in Georgia. I have always loved and respected my brother for the service her provides to others at the worst point in their lives, the loss of a loved one. I finally realized just how much you all are really affected by what you do when my brother performed the service for our younger brother who passed away at age 35. Needless to say it was one of the worst days of our lives collectively. The way my brother dealt with the awful situation and took care of my mother, and other brothers and sisters, especially me was something that I will never forget. My two brothers were extremely close and to watch the dignity and professionalism her portrayed that day made me look at what he does in a completely different way. I don't know that my brother realizes how much my family loves and respects him for the situations he is presented with daily. So I would like to say to all Funeral Directors out there, the job you do is one that few people truly understand but should know that it demands decorum, a true love of others and a huge heart. To my brother, Rob, I love you.
